In my line of work it's not unusual to say "see you next time" to people and places that you've enjoyed over the course of several weeks or months but every now and then there comes a time where you have to say "goodbye". Today is our last call at Juneau, Alaska with the Noordam and while many places will still be here the next time I visit, my usual cafe, Silverbow Bakery, will be gone as they are closing for good on October 4th of this year.
I've been coming here for the last couple of seasons that I've spent in Alaska and I've come to know a few of the people here; it will be sad to see them go but I'm sure they'll be a familiar face in another cafe somewhere next time. Among the places I'll be saying "see you next time" to are Star Fire and Smuggler's Cove in Skagway, Burger Queen and Sweet Mermaid's in Ketchikan, and virtually the entire city of Vancouver.
With all of these bittersweet farewells though, there are some amazing destinations on the horizon; revisiting Seattle, Victoria, and San Diego amongst them. Visiting Hawaii, Fiji, New Zealand, and Australia all before Christmas will be exciting as well - now, bring me that horizon!
